Adidas' Run for the Oceans event has received the Sustainable Event certification from Eventsost.

From May 28 to June 8, 2021, the Run for the Oceans event took place in the city of Valencia, organized by Adidas and produced by MKTG.

Run for the Oceans is an event aimed at combating plastic pollution in the oceans and promoting circular economy practices in the sportswear industry.

The MKTG-produced Run for the Oceans event, which has been certified, encompassed several activities:

  1. Production of responsible content in Valencia to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans and marine ecosystems, promote plastic circularity, and demonstrate how recovered ocean plastic can be given a new life.

  2. Organization of a beach plastic collection in Valencia with volunteers from the NGO Xaloc, committed to the preservation of the maritime and terrestrial natural heritage of the Valencian Community. The collected plastics were assembled into wave-shaped structures displayed in the city center for awareness purposes and later transported to a recycling plant.

  3. The highlight of Run for the Oceans was a race that gathered up to 2,000 runners to contribute kilometers for the cause, with a specific route through the Marina de València. For every kilometer run by participants during the Valencia event, Adidas recycled 10 plastic bottles. Additionally, participants who joined virtually from May 28 to June 8 collectively contributed to the recycling of an equivalent of 10 plastic bottles per kilometer, totaling 500,000 pounds collected, mainly from beaches and coastal areas.

  4. All proceeds from race bib sales were donated in full to Xaloc.

The sustainability plan for Run for the Oceans developed by MKTG included the following actions among others:

  • Use of signage and vinyls without PVC and printed with eco-friendly inks.
  • Use of other eco-friendly materials for race setup and activations.
  • Use of solar energy for wave activations.
  • Selective waste collection during setup and the race.
  • Hiring of local workers.
  • Co-responsibility content program to educate attendees and Valencia citizens about ocean plastic pollution and circular economy principles.
  • Legacy and CSR actions (beach clean-ups and collaboration with local NGOs).
  • Measurement and offsetting of the event's carbon footprint.
